Turn-key document management

Complete, secure document management

Harbor means turn-key document management with a robust feature set and best-in-class security. Perfect for your household.

Documents waiting in Harbor's Inbox, each with a summary and a suggested filing.
  • Access security

With MFA out of the box, and revocable device tokens, Harbor provides best-in-class security to keep you in and everyone else out. A full audit trail shows who has accessed from where.

  • Full device encryption

Harbor encrypts your storage volume to protect you in case your device gets stolen. Drives are encrypted and require unlock after each reboot so no one can access your data.

  • S3 compatible backup

Choose your favorite backup provider such as Backblaze, Wasabi, or Amazon S3 to store data encrypted at rest. This also ensures easy recovery should your device ever fail.

Secure sharing

Secure sharing with your tax advisors

Too many tax professionals don't use proper security when handling your documents. Harbor puts you in charge by letting you define how long files are shared for, with whom, and how many times they can be downloaded.

  • No firewalls to configure

Harbor configures your Tailscale access so you don't have to open or forward ports to share data. Isolated resources handle sharing securely without you having to lift a finger.

  • Choose how you share

Optionally share using an external bucket. Files are encrypted and require a signing key which you provide. Harbor manages the entire lifecycle without anyone accessing your Harbor instance.

  • Audit your files

See who viewed, downloaded, and how many times. Delivery receipts give you peace of mind that files were delivered. Remove access to shared links any time.

FAQ

Questions? We’ve got answers.

What does Harbor cost?
Harbor is free and open source. You host it on your own hardware. We are working on ways to make it easy to deploy Harbor to a cloud platform of your choice. We may also in the future introduce a hosted version, which we may charge for.
How does it work?
You install Harbor on your hardware. It runs on a Raspberry Pi or small form factor computers. Heck, you can even repurpose that old Mac mini and put it to good use. Install is easy — even if you're not technical. Within minutes, you have your own instance running.
How does backup work?
Harbor lets you configure different backup providers. We currently support Backblaze B2, which has a generous free tier to get started. Future versions will add support for S3 compatible storage such as Wasabi, Amazon S3, or any number of vendors following the open object storage standard.
Is my data secure?
The overall premise of Harbor is that you should be able to manage your data, not someone else. If you use a cloud provider, do you really know your data is secure? Employees often have access to hosted systems without your knowledge. Data in those systems often flows through third party providers with different security postures. Data breaches happen in the cloud, which is why Harbor can be hosted inside your four walls. With drive encryption, MFA access, and device tokens, Harbor is more secure out of the box than the vast majority of services you can subscribe to.
Can you recommend inexpensive hardware to run Harbor on?
Yes, sure. Harbor is tested on a Raspberry Pi running Ubuntu, and on small form factor servers like the Protectli Vault.

Your data. Your rules. Your Harbor.

No account on anyone else’s server, and no plan to upgrade. The software, the machine you put it on, and a household that knows where everything is.
